USS Hornet 75th Anniversary Gala
Earlier this month, the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of the commissioning of USS Hornet and the 20th anniversary of the Hornet Museum. The evening featured The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, and a dinner, reception and a presentation from special guest Maritime Archaeologist, James P. Delgado.

Apollo Splashdown 50th Anniversary Evening Tours
The Hornet Museum is also celebrating the 50th anniversary of the “Apollo Splashdown” rescue when the Hornet played an essential role. A special tour of the ship with an Apollo theme took place Nov. 2 — another one is set for Friday, Dec. 21, from 6 to 10 p.m. The tours teach about the history of space aviation and exploration.

Veterans Day Celebration & Community Day
On Sunday, Nov. 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. come aboard for the Hornet’s 75th anniversary of its commissioning, 20th anniversary of becoming a museum and Veterans Day. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day which concluded World War I.

The day will feature a special presentation by Lynn Vincent (the No. 1 New York Times bestselling author) and Sara Vladic (National Geographic historian), authors of Indianapolis: The True Story of the Worst Sea Disaster in U.S. Naval History and the Fifty-Year Fight to Exonerate an Innocent Man which debuted in July at No. 5 on the New York Times Best Seller List.

Second annual Model Expo & Open Cockpit Day
The Hornet Museum, in conjunction with the International Plastic Modelers Society (IPMS) will host the second annual Model Expo and Open Cockpit Day on Saturday, Nov. 17. This incredible day will feature: artistic achievement, family fun and history aboard the USS Hornet.

Modelers from around the state will showcase their artistic skills in a friendly, spirited competition presided over by local IPMS judges. Youth and adults, amateurs and professionals alike are encouraged to enter.

A community Thanksgiving celebration in the spirit of gratitude aboard the USS Hornet, has been set for Saturday, Nov. 17, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sample tastes of the best autumn offerings from the community’s favorite restaurants at the museum’s fall fundraiser.

Tickets include special after-hours evening tours as well as three tasting tickets. Each tasting ticket can be redeemed at one of the participating tasting stations. Additional tasting tickets will be available for purchase at the event.

Museum Store Sunday
Come aboard Sunday, Nov. 25, as the Hornet participates in Museum Store Sunday with the following specials:

• Members receive a 25 percent discount, Nov. 25 only.
• Become a new member on Nov. 25 and get the discount plus a customized USS Hornet Museum tin of chocolate from The San Francisco Chocolate Factory.
• The first 25 customers to spend $25 or more on Nov. 25 receive a special goodie bag.
• On Cyber Monday, the very next day, and for all those too far away to visit the museum in person, orders from the Ship Store e-commerce site received on Nov. 25 or 26 of $25 or more will also receive a customized USS Hornet Museum tin of chocolate from The San Francisco Chocolate Factory!

Help out the Museum
The USS Hornet Museum is recruiting new docents that help handle security, restoration and spruce up museum exhibits. Write to volunteers@uss-hornet.org. The next new volunteer orientation is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 1, at 9 a.m.
