Golfers Set for 95th Alameda Commuters Tournament

The championship division competition of the 95th Alameda Commuters Amateur Golf Tournament will take place Saturday and Sunday, April 29 and 30, at Corica Park.

More than 120 amateur golfers will be vying for the Commuters trophy this year including last year’s champion Domingo Jojola. Jojola secured the victory in the 94th Alameda Commuters tournament championship division by shooting a blazing seven-under par 65 in the second and final round ("https://alamedasun.com/news/jojola-tops-field-94th-alameda-commuters-gol... April 28, 2022).

He entered the final round two strokes back from the lead after a two-under-par 70 in the first round. The Carmichael native was one of 24 golfers within four shots of the lead. However, the University of San Francisco alum used his impressive putting skills in the second round to create distance between he and the rest of the field.

Jojola will begin the tournament with a 9:12 a.m. tee time. His foursome includes Bobby Bucey, Brett Viboch and Eric Yun, 17, who finished tied for second place in last year’s event with a four-under par 140. The Menlo School of Atherton junior finished tied with Marc Engellenner. Engellenner will tee off at 8:12 a.m.

Alameda native Chris Goin, 37, who calls the Chuck Corica Golf Complex his home course and Matthew Lin, 17, rounded out the top five last year with matching three-under par 141s. Goin and Lin, a junior at Head Royce of Oakland, are both scheduled to compete in this year’s competition.

Alameda High School students Kailer Stone and Neil Albelda will also compete in the tournament.

The tournament will be played on the Jack Clark South Course at Corica Golf. The Commuters Tournament is traditionally a two-weekend, 72-hole event, but the tournament has been condensed to a 36-hole event played over one weekend.

This year the Commuters held the women’s, senior (over 55 years in age), and super senior division (over 65 years in age) competitions the weekend before the championship division. Darla May Dela Torre, 16, won the women’s division with a three-under par 141 over the two-round tournament. Randy Haag shot a two-under par 142 to win the senior division competition. Frank Apodaca shot a three-under 141 to win the super senior competition.

The Alameda Commuters Tournament is recognized by the Northern California Golf Association (NCGA) as an official NCGA Points event. Corica Park is located at 1 Clubhouse Memorial Road.
