Golf Club Squares off on Patriot Day
Lady golfers hold club tourney for 83rd straight year
The 83rd annual Alameda Women’s Golf Club (AWGC) Club Championship kicked off last Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Chuck Corica Golf Complex with 26 golfers participating in this year’s iteration.
The tournament spans three rounds over three weeks. The player with the lowest gross score after three rounds wins the championship. Tai Chewpanich holds the early lead after shooting an overall 83 on the first day of play. Chewpanich played in the first flight where five of the six competitors have won the tournament before. Chewpanich is the only one who had not won. Jenny Bae was second overall in the tournament with an overall 87.
The golfers will also play a net tournament. Sarah Valentine holds the early lead in net tournament play after shooting a net 66 in the second flight — handicap of 23 to 25. Valentine holds a four-stroke lead over Juanita Solano, who shot a net 70, in the flight. In fact, the leaders in each of the four flights are ahead by at least four strokes. Barbara Mickle shot a net 73 in the second flight for third place after round one. Carole Evans is in second place in the net tournament after shooting a net 68 in the third flight — handicap of 26 to 28. Jean Cho and Susan Yoon are tied for second place in the flight after they both shot a net 72. Diane Hughes and Wilda Moore are tied in fourth place in the flight after the two shot a net 75.
Though Chewpanich has the lead in the overall gross score tournament, she is tied for second place in the first flight — handicap of nine to 20 — with a net 74. Dot Moody shot a net 70 to lead the first flight after round one. Moody won the gross score tournament in 2004 and 2008. Bae also shot a net 74 for a tie of second place in the flight.
Angie Vaccarezza is atop the fourth flight — handicap of 30 to 40 — after posting a net 71. Susan Logan shot a net 76 for second place, while Bonnie Kim and Kay Park both shot a net 77 to tie for third place. Round two of the tournament will be played today.
