Get Ready to Walk, Alameda
The Alameda Recreation and Park Department has released the schedule for its 2017 Alameda Walks program. All walks begin at 9 a.m. and last approximately one hour; longer walks are noted in the schedule.
This year’s walks begin Saturday, May 6, with a brand-new walk on Coast Guard Island. Meet at the Sea West Credit Union parking lot across the Coast Guard Island Bridge but before the guard shack. Look for the red Alameda Walks hats; no pets, please. Coast Guard personnel guide the tour.
All participants must have a photo ID card to gain access to Coast Guard Island and pre-register for the event.
The following Saturday, May 13, Alameda Sun publishers and historians Eric J. Kos and Dennis Evanosky will lead a walk in conjunction with the Park Street Spring Festival. Meet at Jackson Park, 2430 Encinal Ave. This one hour and 15-minute walk will examine Park Street businesses and vestiges of the past, including a former insane asylum.
