Commuters who used the High Street Bridge on April Fools’ Day found themselves tangled in a protest that had little to do with the shenanigans some expect on that special day. Instead they were witnessing a protest that involved a pair of buses taking employees to Silicon Valley giants Apple and Google.
Protesters had targeted “Google buses” in Oakland and San Francisco before. The April Fools’ Day escapade marked the first time they had visited Alameda, focusing their efforts on buses on the way to the Park & Ride on Island Drive next to the Grandview Pavilion.
Officers from the Sacramento, Alameda and Berkeley police departments have arrested three suspects in connection with the 2010 murder of 35-year-old Eric Franklin in Alameda. One of the men arrested is also wanted in connection with a second killing in unincorporated San Leandro.
Bay Farm residents have come to know and love two species of heron that also call their neighborhood home. Both the great and snowy egret nest on Bay Farm Island near the lagoons that provide the birds with the small fish they need to survive. As the larger of the two species, the great egret Ardea alba stands nearly three feet tall and generally weighs about two pounds. Its cousin, the smaller snowy egret, Egretta thula, weighs about half as much. Observers can easily distinguish the great from the snowy egret.
St. Joseph Notre Dame High School’s Pilots have done it again. For the fifth time in the school’s history, the men’s basketball team has been named state champions. Above, Temidayo Yussuf and Lamont Banks congratulate each other while other team members do the same.
