An Alameda man is in custody after confessing to Alameda police officers that he murdered his wife.

Jerry Canfield entered APD offices at 1555 Oak St. on Sunday, Oct. 26, and told the front desk clerks that he wanted to confess to the murder of his spouse. The admission came just after 6 p.m.

"He said that he killed his wife with a single gunshot," said APD Sgt. Rick Bradley, who would not reveal the type of firearm that was used. Bradley said Canfield, 72, shot his wife because she suffered from numerous ailments.

A powerful political action group (PAC) has decided to invest in Alameda’s future. The Golden State Leadership Fund with its Southern California address has poured tens of thousands of dollars into the races for a seat on the Alameda City Council, allowing incumbent Stewart Chen to outspend his rival, Frank Matarrese.

A slick mailer with a more local origin allows Chen and his fellow city council candidate, Jim Oddie, to share in the out-of-town bounty.

The Lincoln Middle School Band put on a "Westward Bound" performance on Wednesday, Oct. 22, to a packed crowd of families and community members. Those in attendance not only delighted in the musical performances of the talented young players but also feasted on a delicious barbecue dinner. A beautiful sunset treated the crowd just as the students struck up the first notes of the evening.

Last Friday, Kate Pryor and David Lee, (at the far right) from Tucker’s Ice Cream presented Save the Bench with a check for $1,265, the entire proceeds from the sale of a very special flavor of ice cream they created "Dumb Friends Bench Blueberry Buckle."

Accepting the check (from left to right) are Jack Mingo, Jim Manning, Nancy Hird and Betsy Mathieson. Mingo, Murray and Mathieson represent Save the Bench. Hird represents the Alameda Architectural Preservation Society.
