Chef John Thiel of Pappo invites the community to share in his restaurant’s eighth annual soup kitchen. “Giving back to our community and especially to those in need has been an important commitment for us since day one,” said Theil.
Pappo will be accepting donations of clothing, especially socks and jackets, and toiletries, including toothbrushes and soap next Wednesday, Dec. 23, after 3 p.m. and on Dec. 24 from 9 to 11 a.m. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer at the soup kitchen call Pappo at 337-9100. Pappo is located at 2320 Central Ave.
The Alameda County Public Works Agency will be performing emergency repairs to the High Street Bridge on Friday, Dec. 18. The bridge will be closed from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. to all vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic. There will also be some limitations to marine traffic. The U.S. Coast Guard will communicate this information in its weekly “Coast Guard Local Notices to Mariners.”
Detour signs will be in place to guide motorists around the bridge closure. When travelling through the detour areas, motorists are advised to exercise caution and adhere to all traffic regulations.
The Estuary Crossing Shuttle will not run between Thursday, Dec. 24, and Jan. 1, 2016. Service will resume again on Monday, Jan. 4, 2016. Those in need of transportation during this time should visit 511.org.
The Estuary Crossing Shuttle travels between the College of Alameda at Webster Street and Atlantic Avenue and the Lake Merritt BART station. It makes a short intervening loop to Wind River Systems.
Alameda Meals on Wheels, Twin Towers United Methodist Church, and Saboor Zafari of Angela’s Restaurant announced this week they will co-sponsor a free dinner, open to all residents and families in Alameda in need of a hot meal on Christmas Day.
The event will be held at the church, located at Central Avenue and Oak Street on Christmas Day, Friday, Dec. 25, between noon and 3 p.m. The sponsors anticipate serving 750 to 1,000 meals to adults and families with children.
