Four Teams Eliminated
All four basketball teams from Alameda and Encinal high schools were eliminated from the postseason last week.
Alameda
The Alameda men’s basketball team had its season come to a close after a 71-60 loss to Tamalpais High in the North Coast Section Div. II first round on Feb. 21. The Hornets’ season ended after amassing a 19-8 overall record including a 7-3 record in the West Alameda County Conference (WACC) Shoreline League. They finished second in the league.
The Alameda women’s basketball team won its first NCS Div. II match up against Ukiah on Feb. 21, but lost to Miramonte of Orinda in the NCS quarterfinal 75-37 on Feb. 24.
Alameda was seeded ninth, while Ukiah was the eighth seed. The Hornets used a 14-0 run in the first quarter to hold a 16-9 lead at the end of the quarter against the Wildcats. They led 16-18 at halftime. The Hornets outscored the Wildcats 22-20 in the second half.
Alameda’s game against Miramonte was the complete opposite. The Matadors scored at least 20 points in the first three quarters. The Matadors led 74-25 at the end of the third quarter.
The Hornets finished the season with a 16-12 overall record.
Encinal
The Encinal men’s basketball team was also defeated by Miramonte 79-50 in the NCS Div. III first round on Feb. 21.
The underdog Jets were no match for the Matadors. The Jets came into the contest as the 11th seed, while the Matadors were the six seed. The Jets ended the 2016-2017 season with an 11-16 overall record and a 5-5 record in the WACC Shoreline League. They finished tied for third in the league with Hayward.
The Encinal women’s basketball team fell to San Marin of Novato 64-48 in the NCS Div. II first round on Feb. 21 to end their 2016-2017 season.
The Jets fought hard in the playoff match up, but could never get over the hump to beat the heavy favorite. The Jets trailed 36-28 at the half. They finished the season 10-17 overall.
