Football Scores from Week One

The first week of the 2019 high school football season was a success for both Alameda and Encinal high school teams.

Encinal High
Encinal High School (EHS) put a thumping on the overmatched Washington High School (WHS) of Fremont football team in route to a 42-0 shutout victory on Aug. 23 on the road. The Jets outdid last year’s blowout of WHS when they beat the Huskies, 41-0, in the 2018 season opener.

The Jets used their dynamic duo at running back to control the contest. EHS accumulated 258 yards on the ground on just 30 rush attempts for an 8.6 yards-per-carry average.
Senior Isaiah Smith had a couple rushing attempts longer than 20 yards. His longest run was for 33 yards in the first quarter. He later capped off the drive with a six-yard touchdown run, which was the Jets first score of the game and his only touchdown on the night. He finished with 120 rushing yards on just nine attempts.

Fellow running back Archie Cole had a big day on the ground as well. The senior was the main supplier of points for the Jets with four touchdowns in the game. His first came in the second quarter to give EHS a 14-0 lead. He added a touchdown in the third quarter and two in the fourth. Cole finished with 80 yards rushing on 14 carries for a 5.7 yards-per-carry average.

Quarterback David Romero-Reinholz also provided production on the ground. After a bad handoff exchange, Romero-Reinholz picked up the loose ball and rushed for 33 yards. He did most of his damage through the air. He threw for 148 yards on eight-of-14 passing.

Reinholz and Keirr Stewart connected for a 42-yard passing touchdown in the third quarter to extend the Jet lead to 28-0. He escaped the pass rush then he hit Stewart for a short pass. Stewart was able to elude several defenders and run in for the score. Stewart was the benefactor of much of Romero-Reinholz passes. He finished with six catches for 131 yards and the one touchdown.

The Jets held the Huskies scoreless in the contest thanks to their suffocating defense. They forced WHS into three turnovers (two fumbles, one interception). The Jet defense was led by senior Jezaiah Naigulevu who had 10 tackles and a sack in the contest.

The Jets (1-0) will play Analy of Sebastopol tomorrow at home in its net game.

Alameda High
Alameda High School (AHS) took down West Alameda County Conference newcomer Oakland Military Institute 19-0 in the season opener. It was a successful first start for new Hornet starting quarterback Eric Jarecki.

The Hornet defense smothered the Grizzlies, which is in its second year as a varsity team. The Hornets will take on WHS in its next contest tomorrow on the road.
