Five Alameda Basketball Teams Enter Postseason
The North Coast Section (NCS) basketball playoffs are in full swing and five Alameda high school teams earned a shot to compete for a section title.
The Encinal Jets women’s basketball team finished off its 2013-2014 season with an 18-7 overall record and a 9-1 record in the West Alameda County Conference (WACC). The Lady Jets earned a number two seed in the NCS Division III playoffs and an opening round bye.
The Jets took down Kennedy of Richmond in a 60-58 nail bitter in the second round Friday, Feb. 28. The Jets played three seed Campolindo of Moraga yesterday in the NCS semifinals. If the Jets win they will play the winner of Miramonte of Orinda and Analy of Sebastopol in the finals tomorrow.
The men’s team finished its regular season 19-7 and a perfect 10-0 in the WACC. The Jets entered the NCS Division III playoffs as a nine seed. They defeated Hercules 69-64 in the first round on Feb. 25, but the Jets were no match for one seed Bishop O’ Dowd of Oakland in its 97-64 defeat.
The Tri-County League Champions St. Joseph Notre Dame men’s basketball team (24-5 overall) is the one seed in the NCS Division V playoffs. They took down Head Royce 57-32 in the second round March 1 after receiving a first-round bye. The Pilots faced University-San Francisco in the semifinals yesterday.
The Lady Pilots also earned a playoff spot with a 14-12 record including 4-6 in the Tri-County League. The team downed Chinese Christian of Alameda 52-20 in the first round, but lost to Petaluma 56-53 in the second round on March 1 and is now out of the postseason.
The Alameda Hornets women’s basketball team’s (16-11 overall and 4-6 in the WACC) season came to an end after its 77-71 first round loss in the NCS Division II playoffs to American of Fremont on Feb. 25.
