Fencing Club Program Set

The executive director of West Coast Fencing Archive will hold an informative program on the “History of Fencing in the Bay Area” Saturday, April 14, at the Pacific Fencing Club.

Doug Nichols, West Coast Fencing Archive’s executive director and archivist, is a renowned fencing archivist and director of the fencing documentary The Last Captain about the life and career  of Gyorgy Piller, an Olympic fencer in the 1930s. The presentation will take place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Historically, the San Francisco Bay Area has been home to some of the world’s greatest fencers, many of whom emigrated here from Europe. That legacy has produced American coaches and fencers who are now competing at the top levels of the Olympics and World Cup. Nichols will tell the rich and intricate story of great athletic and cultural achievements and the colorful personalities who made them happen.

The event is free and open to the public. Pacific Fencing Club is located at 2329 Santa Clara Ave. For more information, call 814-1800.
