Games, booths, prizes (gold fish and more), face painting, mask making, the Shushan Saloon and the Shushan Deli are a few of the fun and delicious activities taking place this Sunday, March 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Temple Israel of Alameda’s world famous Temple Purim. The temple is located at 3183 Mecartney Rd.
Alameda author and editor Julia Park Tracey annouced Monday her latest book in The Doris Diaries series: Reaching for the Moon won the grand prize at the Great Northwest Book Festival, which honors the best titles of the late winter and early spring season. Tracey released the book in 2013.
The USS Hornet Museum will pay tribute to two local veterans of the famed World War II Tuskegee Air Group during its March Living Ship Day. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American military aviators in the United States Armed Forces.
At 1 p.m. the Tuskegee veterans and Tuskegee historian Dave Cunningham will speak, followed by a public meet and greet.
The Hornet Band will perform big band music selections from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
While Alameda’s local schools are friendly rivals for sure, the class presidents representing the student leadership of Alameda, Encinal and St. Joseph high schools have teamed up to hold an affordable prom dress sale. The trio: Emily Rentschler of Encinal, Marisa Woo of Alameda High and Marissa Murphy of St. Joe’s invite students to find affordable dresses and possibly win a free prom ticket just for showing up.
The sale will be held this Saturday, March 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Alameda High New Gym at 2200 Central Ave.
Twin Towers United Methodist Church, 1411 Oak St., will host the sixth Women in Military History event at noon, Saturday, March 15. The celebration honors the military service of all women of all eras. An honor guard will welcome guests.
Delphine Metcalf-Foster, Disabled American Veterans’ third national junior vice commander and Major Esther C. Sablan, who commands the 129th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 129th Rescue Wing at Moffett Field, will make presentations.
