Endorsements Shape Up
The San Francisco Bay Chapter of the Sierra Club has endorsed former City Councilman Frank Matarrese in his bid to regain a seat on the council.
The teachers’ union, the Alameda Education Association, has announced its continued support of Mayor Marie Gilmore in her bid to stay on as mayor. This endorsement came in spite of Alameda Unified School District trustee Trish Spencer announcing her bid for the mayor’s seat (see Point-Counterpoint on this weeks’ Opinion page, page 6.).
The firefighters’ union has also announced its endorsements of Gilmore, Councilmember Stewart Chen and City Council candidate Jim Oddie.
Endorsements at the Democratic Club of Alameda are evolving. At this month’s meeting the club did not endorse any school board candidates. Candidates Solana Henneberry and Mike McMahon did not exceed the required 60 percent vote of club members to garner endorsements.
The club endorsed Jim Oddie for City Council. Frank Matarrese did not receive the necessary 60 percent. The club also endorsed Measure I, the Alameda Unified School District’s bond measure.
The club will meet from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 3, in Conference Room C at the Alameda Hospital, 2070 Clinton Ave. It will consider endorsements for mayor and the health-care district board. The meeting is open to the public, but only club members can cast votes for endorsements.
