Encinal Off to Great Start

The Encinal High School Jets football team moved to 2-0 on the season after a 42-28 victory over Analy High of Sebastopol Friday, Aug. 24, on the road.
The Tigers’ offense struck first when quarterback Nic Visser broke the pocket and evaded several Jet defenders on his way to a 65-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The Jets answered back with a 32-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback David Romero-Rienholz to sophomore wide receiver Keirr Stewart. Stewart broke a tackle and dashed into the end zone. The teams ended the first quarter in a 7-7 tie.
Analy retook the lead in the second quarter with another touchdown by Visser. This time he used his arm on a one-yard pass to senior wide receiver Tyler Nebozuk. The Jets answered right back. Stewart received the ensuing kickoff and scampered down the right sideline for a 79-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Both teams failed extra point attempts. The Jets broke the tie with a 2-yard run by Isaiah Smith. The Jets led 21-13 at halftime.

The Jets added to its lead in the third quarter. Romero-Rienholz threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Landis Green to take a 29-13 lead.

Green and Stewart both made big plays on the defensive side of the ball in the fourth quarter. Stewart cut in front of a receiver to pick off Visser and sprinted 55 yards for his third touchdown of the game. Green intercepted a deflected pass late and ran 85 yards down the field for a score to seal the victory. The Tigers tried to make a comeback with a 44-yard touchdown pass from Visser to Nebozuk, their second touchdown connection of the game, but the game was out of reach.

The Jets are familiar with the Tigers. Last year in the North Coast Section Div. III playoffs the Jets thumped the Tigers 42-19 in the opening round. The Jets rushed for more than 500 yards on the ground.

Encinal will play De Anza of El Sobrante tomorrow on the road.

Alameda High
