Two Encinal High School (EHS) senior athletes were honored with a collegiate signing ceremony at EHS’ annual sports award dinner on Wednesday, May 22.

Alex Olaes and Shelby Nelson made their college choices known at the annual ceremony. Olaes will be attending Menlo College to play collegiate baseball, while Nelson signed to attend UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) and compete in cross country and track.

Menlo College is a private university in Atherton, Calif. The Oaks are a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and play in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
UCSB is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and plays in the Big West Conference. Last year, the Gauchos women’s cross country team finished fourth in the conference title meet.

As a senior, Olaes, a catcher, accumulated a .368 batting average, while racking up 32 hits, 25 runs and 13 RBIs in 25 games. He helped lead the Jets to a North Coast Section (NCS) Div. III baseball tournament appearance.

Nelson won several cross country and track meets in her four years as a Jet. She won the women’s 1,600-meter track meet at the San Leandro Invitational on March 16. She also won the women’s 3,200-meter West Alameda County Conference (WACC) track meet on April 10.
Nelson is a multisport athlete who also competed in water polo. She helped lead the Jets to the WACC final and an appearance in the NCS Div. II women’s water polo tournament in 2018.

The athletes were recognized with a PowerPoint presentation that chronicled their individual athletic achievements.

The Encinal High School Spring Athletic Banquet recognized the school’s team and individual athletic achievements for the 2018-2019 school year. The annual sports banquet is sponsored by the EHS Athletic Boosters.
