Diwali Celebrations Held at Mastick

On Nov. 4, the Indian community in Alameda gathered at the Mastick Senior Center Social Hall to celebrate Diwali. Diwali, or Deepavali, the festival of lights, is a joyous celebration for Indians, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.

More than 150 people of all ages attended the event dressed in vibrant traditional attire. This marked a significant milestone as the first large-scale event in Alameda, reflecting the growing population of people of Indian origin in Alameda.

Elaborate decorations adorned the event hall, including Rangoli designs, traditional Diyas, and vibrant marigold flower strands. The celebrations began with Nishant Joshi, Chief of Police for Alameda, as chief guest, lighting a special Diya. The celebration featured Diya lighting games for children, engaging performances by both kids and adults, Mehandi designs for hands, Bollywood musical entertainment, and lively dancing.

The event was catered by Veg and Chat Restaurant in Fremont. The event’s culinary delights included delectable Samosas, Naan, Paratta, Paneer Tikka Masala, Aloo Gobi, Channa Masala, Raita, and the sweet finale of Rasmalai — a feast for the senses.

Shubha Fanse and Saravana Suthanthira are members of the Alameda Indian Community.
