From the Desk of the Executive Director

Spring has sprung and I, for one, am so excited as that means we are heading into a truly exciting season for the West Alameda Business Association (WABA).

Several representatives from the the City of Alameda attended WABA’s monthly board meeting, hosted by Hawthorn Suites on Webster Street. WABA was excited to host special guests from the City of Alameda: Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft, Andrew Thomas from Planning and Transportation and Amanda Gehrke from Economic Development. The board was excited to learn about some new city developments.

The board also learned about the reconfiguration of Otis Drive, the Special Election on Measure A and B, and WABA’s upcoming Town Hall meeting hosted by Michaan’s Auction Warehouse and the Oakland A’s.

WABA’s monthly mixer was held on March 27 at Almanac Beer Company. It was a fantastic event for our association members to mix and mingle.

New Sales Tax Rate

WABA also wants to remind everyone to remember to adjust for the new sales tax rate. The new sales tax became effective on Monday, April 1, and has increased to 9.75 percent.
The half-cent increase (previously 9.25 percent) is a result of the voter-approved City of Alameda Essential Services Protection Measure that was passed last November.

Also worth noting is that, effective April 1, the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) requires in-state and out-of-state sellers with a certain amount of activity in California to collect and remit all applicable sales and use taxes. This applies to businesses that have more than $100,000 in taxable sales in California, or at least 200 separate transactions for delivery into California.

Best of Alameda
WABA members were well represented among Alameda Magazine’s “The Best Of Alameda” winners. In fact, the West End and Webster Street have a ton of winners! We are thankful for the ongoing support of these wonderful West End businesses.

Taste of Alameda
WABA is also happy to report that ticketing is live for the annual “Taste of Alameda” event hosted by Otaez Mexican Restaurant and the West End Arts and Entertainment District. The event will be held upstairs on Wednesday, April 24, from 6 to 9 p.m.

See WABA’s facebook or eventbrite for ticketing information.

As always, it is a great pleasure to represent and advocate for West Alameda, a neighborhood I call home. Feel free to contact me at linda@westalamedabusiness.com or 523-5955.
