Cross Country Teams Compete in Sectionals
All three Alameda high school cross country teams competed in the North Coast Section Cross Country Championships Saturday, Nov. 19, at Hayward High School.
Women’s competitions
The Alameda High School (AHS) women’s cross-country team finished eighth out of 21 teams in the women’s Div. II 3-mile meet. AHS senior Sophia Carpenter led the way for the Hornets by finishing seventh overall out of 148 individual runners. Carpenter finished the 3-mile race with a time of 18:45.98. Fellow senior Camille Dawson was the next Hornet to cross the finish line. She ended her race with a time of 20:15.65 putting her in 43rd place overall. Sophomore Ariana McCants (20:24.47 - 49th place), junior Alexandra Mills (21:39.36 - 67th place), and senior Audrey Barnes (21:44.84 - 70th place) rounded out the Hornets’ top five in the meet.
The team competition is decided by the top five finishers of each team. Each runner is given a point that matches their individual place in the race. For example, the 10th place runner is given 10 points. The team with the lowest score wins.
The Encinal High School (EHS) women’s team finished 11th out of 15 teams in the women’s Div. IV 3-mile race. Sophomore Katelyn Shafer paced the Jets with a time of 20:12:85. Her time put her in 25th place overall out of 110 participants. Freshman Wren Dieter-Weisman was the next Jet to cross the finish line. Dieter-Wiseman finished 60th overall with a time of 21:45.52. Sophomore Cadence Tramel (23:10.82 - 86th place), freshman Avo Luo (23:27.72 - 88th place), and freshman Adaysia Hernandez (24:02.84 - 95th place) rounded out the top five for the Jets.
The St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) women’s team finished 10th out of 15 teams in the women’s Div. V 3-mile race. Senior Nicole Chan was the first Pilot to cross the finish line with a time of 19:23.27. Her time put her in 21st place out of 117 participants. Sophomore Izabella Jauergui (20:55.58 - 44th place), junior Luisa Barrantes (22:04.91 - 61st place), freshman Daniela Lopez (22:40.69 - 67th place), and senior Amber Cox (22:54.58 - 71st place) rounded out the Pilots’ top five in the race.
Men’s competitions
The AHS men’s team finished 11th out of 23 schools in the men’s Div. II 3-mile cross country meet. AHS sophomore Naveen Dawson paced the Hornets with a time of 16:24.46. His time put him in 29th place individually out of 160 runners. Junior Max Bellotti was the second Hornets to finish. He completed the race in 40th place with a time of 16:34.90. AHS seniors Theo Hartlaub (17:44.10 - 83rd place), Oscar Crane (17:48.45 - 88th place), and Peter Scott (17:53.23 - 91st place) round out the top five for the Hornets.
The EHS men’s team finished 16th out of 18 schools in the men’s Div. IV 3-mile cross country meet. EHS freshman Jayden Smith was the first Jet to cross with a time of 17:28.88, putting him in 60th place out of 128 participants. Senior Diego Cerna (18:32.52 - 86th place), sophomore Laith Owens (19:01.05 - 92nd place), sophomore Ian Nebeker (19:29.67 - 101st place), and freshman Tyson Valle (20:05.58 - 110th place) rounded out Encinal’s top five.
SJND did not compete in the men’s Div. V team competition, but several Pilots competed individually. Senior George Jensen finished 43rd overall out of 179 athletes with a time of 17:28.71. SJND sophomore Finneas Jensen came in 57th place with a time of 17:52.86. Junior Samuel Kohler finished in 77th place with a time of 18:23.56.
