Cross Country Teams Compete across Bay
The Alameda and Encinal high school cross country teams began their fall 2019 seasons at the Lowell Invitational at Hellman Hollow at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco on Saturday, Sept. 7.
The Alameda High School (AHS) women’s team finished fourth out of 24 teams in the varsity Division II competition. They were spearheaded by junior Olivia Liuson who finished sixth overall out of 164 participants. Liuson finished with a time of 17:17.10 in the 2.93-mile race.
Sophomore Katy Hosokawa finished 20th with a time of 18:30.03. Senior Geraldine Yue came in 29th place with a time of 18:40.70. Sophomore Madison Tiaffay was the fourth Hornet to cross the finish line with a time of 19:10.48. Her time put her in 45th place. Senior Janine Barot rounded out the team’s top five with a 56th place showing and a time of 19:38.25. Granada High School (GHS) of Livermore won the team competition.
The Encinal High School (EHS) women’s cross country team also took part in the Div. II competition. However, the Jets did not have enough participants to take part in the team competition. EHS sophomore Malou Killian was the first Jet to finish the race at 20:28.69. Her time put her in 86th place.
Freshman Tessa Vasquez came in 103rd place with a time of 20:57.03. Senior Melody Ma was the third and final Jet to cross the finish line at 21:49.36 for 118th place.
The AHS men’s cross country team finished ninth in the Div. II race out of 30 teams. The Hornets were led by junior Emilia Cazares who came in 25th place out of 204 individual runners. He completed the race with a time of 15:20.39. Senior Patrick Nguyen finished one second behind his teammate with a time of 15:21.49. His time put him in 28th place.
Senior Ian Pang came in 60th place with a time of 15:46.95. Fellow senior Connor Lynch came in 90th place with a time of 16:17.55. Senior Benjamin Ting rounded out the Hornets’ top five in 111th place with a time of 16:41.04. GHS won the team competition.
The EHS men’s cross country team took part in the men’s varsity Div. I competition. They came in 28th place out of 33 teams. EHS sophomore Ben Wilson-Ripsom was the first Jet to cross the finish line. He came in 44th place out of 221 participants. Wilson-Ripsom finished with a time of
Junior Gabe Jones came in 130th place with a time of 16:43.87. Junior Dylan Mochizuki finished in 149th place with a time of 17:00.38. Fellow junior Myles Ferguson posted a time of 19:21.46 for 202nd place. Senior William Norboe rounded out the top five with a time of 19:46.92 and 206th place. Bellarmine Prep of San Jose won the team competition.
