Cross Country Teams Compete

 

The Encinal and Alameda high school cross country teams took part in the second West Alameda County Conference (WACC) meets last Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Hayward High.

The Alameda High men’s team went third, while Encinal came in ninth place. The Hornets posted an 87 while first-place Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland posted a 33. Junior Ethan West came in 12th place overall out of 77 participants. West finished the three-mile race in 16:32.74. Senior Julian Aguilar was the second Hornet to finish. He came in 16th place with a time of 16:40.77. Juniors Cedric Murphy and Mathew Yep came in 18th and 19th place, respectively. Murphy finished in a time of 16:48.64, while Yep posted a time of 16:51.46. Senior Cameron Yuen came in 22nd place with a time of 16:58.09. 

Encinal’s fastest runner was Michael Chen who finished in 54th place with a time 18:46.63. He finished ahead of his teammates Dylan Auberjuan and Luis Booth who came in 57th and 58th place, respectively. 

The Hornet women’s team came in second place out of nine teams with a score of 50. Bishop O’Dowd won the event with a score of 44. Alameda sophomore Lauren Lum finished first in the event with a time of 18:01.89. She beat out 71 other runners. 

Hornet senior Lara Vetter finished in fifth place with a time of 18:32.30. Allie Cvitanovic (19:08-13th place), Maya Carpenter (19:10.25-14th place) and Rachel Wellman (19:39.25-17th place) rounded out Alameda’s top five. Encinal finished in seventh place with a score of 178. The Jets best finisher was sophomore Shelby Nelson who came in fourth place with a time of 18:20.76. Its next best finisher was Rebecca Stiling in 31st place. Marlene Delgado came in 51st place while Anneli Arneson (54th place) and Gabrielle Cassaro (57th place) rounded out the Jets’ top five.
