Connolly Wins 95th Commuters
San Francisco native Daniel Connolly defeated Michael Carrillo in a playoff to win the 95th Alameda Commuters Tournament’s championship division Sunday, April 30. Both golfers shot a two-under par 142 after two rounds of play on the Jack Clarke Course at the Chuck Corica Golf Complex.
Connolly, 25, won the playoff after posting a better score on the par-five first hole.
It looked like Connolly was going to cruise to a victory. He held a two-shot lead entering the 18th hole after Carrillo, a Chualar, Calif. native, shot a bogey on the 17th hole. On the 18th hole, Connolly hit a drive into the fairway bunker and three-putted. He eventually shot a double-bogey six on the last hole. Carrillo made par on the final hole, giving him an even par in the second round, setting up the playoff.
The field of more than 120 golfers had to endure gusting winds in excess of 20 miles an hour at times during the final round. Winds may have affected some of the round two scores.
Connolly posted an impressive three-under par 69 in the first round on Saturday, April 29, but followed it with a one-over par in the final round.
San Francisco native Jack Barber posted the best round one score with a six-under 66. He held a three-shot lead over Connolly after round one. However, Barber posted a five-over 77 in the second round including a three-putt on the final hole, which knocked him out of the playoff. He finished tied for third overall with a one-under par 143.
Not all golfers shot poorly in the second round. Zack Missigman, a St. Mary’s College golfer, shot a four-under 68 in the second round after shooting three-over in round one. It was the best score of the second round. Matt Thornton shot a three-under par in the second round after shooting two-over par in round one. Missgman, Thornton, and Barber finished in a three-way tie for third place to round out the top five.
Last year’s winner, Domingo Jojola, finished tied for sixth place with an even-par 144. He shot two-under par in round one and two-over par in round two. Alameda High School golfer Kailer Stone finished tied for 20th at six-over par 150. His teammate on the Alameda High golf team Neil Albelda finished at 18-over par.
The Alameda Commuters Golf Tournament is one of the oldest amateur tournaments in the nation.
