Clement Avenue Extension Opens Tomorrow

Clement Avenue Extension Opens Tomorrow
The City of Alameda announced the opening of the extension of Clement Avenue behind the former Del Monte building site. The extension will connect Clement Avenue from Entrance Road to the intersection of Sherman Street and Atlantic Avenue.
The Clement Avenue extension is part of the development project at the former Del Monte building site. City staff is working with the developer, Wood Partners, to coordinate the signalization of a new traffic signal at the intersection of Clement Avenue, Atlantic Avenue, and Sherman Street, per the development agreement. The city expects the work to be complete by 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, at which time the newly constructed extension of Clement Avenue will be officially open to automobile traffic.
This new segment of Clement Avenue is a public roadway with two lanes of traffic, on-street parking, storm water treatment basins, landscaping, and brick-accented sidewalks. The brick is reclaimed from the historic Del Monte Building.
The project will also include two-way protected bike lanes that will be a part of the Cross Alameda Trail (CAT). The protected bike lanes on the north side of Clement Avenue will connect the existing CAT segments from Entrance Road to Jean Sweeney Park. This is the seventh CAT segment to be completed since construction on the trail began five years ago. With this new quarter-mile segment, the 4.1-mile cross-town separated biking and walking facility will be just under 75% complete, according to the city.
Now that this segment of CAT is complete, bicyclist can ride 2.5 miles on completely separated bikeways from the Seaplane Lagoon Ferry Terminal to Ohlone Street.
Planning is underway for the remaining 25% of CAT. This will include a segment in front of the former Pennzoil site on Clement from Hibbard to Grand streets — the segment will also include a roadway for vehicle traffic. This segment will be completed when the former Pennzoil property is remediated and redeveloped. San Ramon-based development company Trumark Homes is planning to build 90 townhomes at the site at 2015 Grand St. (“Plans afoot for Pennzoil Site,” Dec. 1, 2021). When that part of the project is completed, CAT will connect from Seaplane Lagoon Ferry Terminal to the intersection of Clement and Willow Street. It has not been determined when the Pennzoil extension will be complete.
Wood Partners is building Alta Star Harbor, a 372-unit luxury mixed-use project, at the former Del Monte building site (“Del Monte Project Moving Forward,” Feb. 25, 2020). Construction of the new development has caused multiple road closures in the nearby area. First in December, Sherman Street, between Buena Vista Avenue and Wind River Road, was closed to vehicle traffic (“West End Road Closed for December,” Dec. 9, 2021). The road reopened in January after delays due to poor weather. Then in May of this year, Entrance Road between Buena Vista and Clement was closed (Del Monte Building Construction Causes Another Road Closure,” May 4). The road reopened on May 24, according to the city.
It has not been determined when Alta Star Harbor will open. To learn more about CAT, visit www.alamedaca.gov/cat.
