City Warns Residents of Possible Noise Levels
Alameda residents should be on alert for loud noise this weekend from the Portola Music Festival in San Francisco. The event takes place on Saturday, Sept. 30 and Sunday, Oct. 1 from 1 to 11p.m.
Last year, the festival caused several noise complaints from Alameda residents who were inconvenienced by the loud noise coming from across the bay. The Alameda Police Department issued a community alert after receiving several calls from residents.
“Everyone knew of the potential problem associated with the noise, it was no longer music, it was torture,” wrote Alameda resident Joel Rambaud in a letter to the editor to the Alameda Sun.
Since last year, the city has been in close contact with Goldenvoice, the event’s organizer. According to a report, they developed sound mitigation solutions based on advisement from an industry expert sound system designer and engineer, including adjusting stage and speaker configurations and hiring a sound monitoring consultant group.
The city is also warning residents they might hear sound checks sporadically on Thursday and Friday from noon to 10 p.m., with additional sound checks on event days beginning at 9 a.m. The city will share a noise hotline during the event to call in real time with any concerns.
Last year, an estimated 30,000 people attended the event adding to the noise levels.
The festival takes place at Pier 80 in San Francisco. Attendees must be 21 years or older to attend. Musical guests include Skrillex, Thundercat, Nelly Furtado and more. More than 30 acts will perform during the two-day festival.
Goldenvoice also produces the iconic Coachella festival.
