City Prepares for Rainstorms
City officials are asking residents to prepare for expected rainy weather this week leading into next week.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Alameda will face a likely chance of rain starting Wednesday, Nov. 15 until early Sunday, Nov. 19. The heaviest rain will take place Friday night into Saturday morning, which the NWS describes as “showers.”
The city is offering each Alameda household five free sandbags to prepare for the upcoming rains and the storm season. Sandbags can be retrieved anytime from the city’s self-serve sandbag station on West Midway Avenue cross street, Lexington Street behind City Hall West, 950 W. Mall Square, at Alameda Point.
In addition, on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 8 a.m. to noon, the city is hosting a sandbag station event near City Hall West at Lexington Street and W. Tower Avenue.
Also, the planned Posey Tube (State Route 61) overnight closure on Tuesday, Nov. 14, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 29. According to Caltrans, the rescheduling is due to the expected rainy weather.
The tube will now close at 10 p.m. Nov. 29 and reopen at 4:30 a.m. the following morning.
Both the motorway and the adjacent path are closed during tube closures. The lights inside the tube will be turned off during the closure. The Webster and Posey tubes connect the cities of Alameda and Oakland. The Webster Tube will remain open. The closure is weather permitting. The Posey Tube will remain open in the daytime. The closure is overnight only. Detours will be in place at the Posey Tube and Caltrans staff will be in place to assist motorists.
