City Council Candidate Paul Beusterien
Slogan: Even-Keeled Leadership for Alameda
Statement: Alameda, just like the rest of the Bay Area and country, has challenges ahead: Addressing housing availability and affordability, public safety, and climate change. I want to grow Alameda responsibly while keeping and enhancing what we love about our city. I’ll work to support and fully staff our police force. I believe in police accountability and will work to increase transparency. Most of Alameda is a few feet above sea level. We need to invest in flood prevention both to reduce risk and to reduce increasingly expensive flood insurance costs. We need to address Alameda’s high city-staff turnover. Four city managers in a year is not healthy for the employees or the city. I will work on a sustainable plan to deal with Alameda’s large unfunded pension liabilities. I will work to put Ranked Choice Voting on the ballot to encourage more representative and collaborative government. I want to make progress on these initiatives while preserving the things about Alameda that we appreciate: Our recreation and parks, our historic and family-friendly neighborhoods, our libraries and schools, and the Park and Webster Street corridors. I want to apply my fact-based leadership to bring collaborative solutions to Alameda.
