CIF Ends High School Spring Sports Season
On Friday, April 3, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) announced the cancellation of the 2020 high school sports spring season.
The cancellation was due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has canceled or postponed sporting events around the world. The announcement means the end of the 2020 baseball, softball, men’s golf, men’s tennis, men’s volleyball, swimming and track-and-field seasons for Alameda high school teams.
The CIF, the state’s governing body for interscholastic athletic competitions, said the decision was spurred by Gov. Gavin Newsom’s mandate to continue distance learning for California students.
“The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) does not see an avenue for the spring sports season to continue,” said CIF Executive Director Ron Nocetti.
