Chabad Offers Free Services Jewish People of All Backgrounds
With just a few weeks before the onset of the Jewish New Year, the question of where to attend services is high on the list for many Jewish families and singles. Recognizing the often high price tag attached to the experience, Chabad of Alameda is offering their friendly and welcoming services for free for individuals of all ages in the Alameda Jewish community. Song, commentary, and the use of English-Hebrew prayer-books invite individuals of all levels to become active participants in the service.
The “Shofar in The Park” will take place on Monday, Sept. 26 from 5 to 5:30 p.m., at Rittler Park, 1400 Otis Dr.
The sounding of the shofar is the central mitzvah of Rosh Hashanah. Typically, it is part of the Rosh Hashanah synagogue services. However, if for any reason one did not attend services, the shofar sounding can be fulfilled throughout the day of Rosh Hashanah. The mitzvah of shofar also contains many deep and inspiring messages for us to reflect upon.
Families are also invited to experience the joy and connection of community to usher in the new year at a Pre-Rosh Hashanah Fair and a community Rosh Hashanah dinner. A special evening of connection and celebration for Jewish women is also planned at the annual Challah Bake. For more details, visit www.JewishAlameda.com/high.
For decades, Chabad-Lubavitch — an international Jewish organization that firmly believes Jewish traditions and customs are the birthright of every Jew — has made High Holiday services available free of charge, a model other synagogues and organizations around the world are aiming to replicate.
Rosh Hashanah is observed this year beginning sundown on Sunday, Sept. 25 through nightfall on Tuesday, September 27. Yom Kippur begins Tuesday, Oct. 4 at sundown and extends until nightfall on Wednesday, Oct. 5.
