East Bay historians Annalee Allen and Gene Anderson will explore the history of Carnegie Libraries in Alameda County at the Elks Lodge, 2255 Santa Clara Ave., at 7 p.m. tonight. The steel magnate turned philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie, funded the construction of hundreds of libraries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the one here in Alameda at the corner of Oak Street and Santa Clara Avenue (above). Allen and Anderson will discuss the libraries throughout the East Bay that provided the public with educational facilities that were both functional and beautiful.
