Cancellation Mars Island Bowl Lead Up

Despite having a full 10-game season scheduled the Encinal High School (EHS) football team knows to take nothing for granted.

EHS was scheduled to visit Castlemont High of Oakland on Sept. 3. However, a COVID-19 outbreak amongst the Knights led to the game being canceled. This left the Jets with a week to try and find a replacement opponent.

On Wednesday, Sept. 1, the Jets finalized a game with Biggs High School in Biggs, Calif. The Wolverines planned to drive 142 miles to play EHS on Friday night.

“With Castlemont canceling we were disappointed,” said senior linebacker Kameran Cole. “But then we were given the chance to finally play. As a team we realize this year isn’t promised with COVID around.”

However, the Jets were notified hours before the game against Biggs that it was cancelled due a lack of medical trainers. The abrupt cancellation left players frustrated.

“We were hyped to play,” said junior lineman John Marshall. “Got the news right before the game so feelings got the best of most of the players.”

Home teams are responsible for securing athletic trainers. The EHS athletic department did not respond to requests for comment.

Instead of playing, the Jets (1-0) practiced in preparation for the 66th Island Bowl against Alameda High School (AHS).

Huskies Knock off Hornets

Alameda High School’s (AHS) comeback effort against Washington High School of Fremont came up short last Friday at home.

The Hornets (1-1) trailed 18-6 heading into the fourth quarter. A touchdown and two-point conversion cut the lead to 18-14, but the Hornets could not overcome the large deficit.

Island Bowl

The Island Bowl returns to Alameda Friday, Sept. 10 after a one-year hiatus. Encinal’s Stargell Field will play host to this year’s iteration.

The Jets and Hornets had their 2020 fall football season shortened into a four-game spring 2021 season due to the coronavirus pandemic. The two teams did participate in a scrimmage on March 12, but it was a watered-down affair compared to the excitement of the Island Bowl.

The Jets have an opportunity to close the gap in the overall Island Bowl record. . Currently, AHS has a 33-30-2 record against EHS.

EHS won the last Island Bowl, 42-0, on Sept. 13, 2019. In fact, the Jets won the last four Island Bowls. The Hornets’ last win in the Island Bowl was a 39-23 victory in 2015.
