Call for Scholarship Applications Open

The Bonta California Progress Foundation invites high school seniors, entering college students or current first-year college students to submit an application for free money for college.

The foundation highly encourages applicants who are low-income or from disadvantaged backgrounds to apply. In 2017, Assm. Rob Bonta launched the foundation with the purpose of supporting communities, organizations and individuals that lift up the social, economic, educational, civic and environmental well-being of Californians. The foundation also aims to advance progressive values in California and around the world.

To this end, the foundation provides a limited number of scholarships to students with a record of academic achievement, leadership and service to their communities, who would benefit from additional support to receive higher education.

Awards are given contingent upon proof of registration or enrollment in an institute of higher education. This may include: technical schools, community colleges or four-year colleges.

Award recipients must also submit a brief report, summarizing their academic and extracurricular and professional work during the 2019-2020 academic year, by May 1, 2020.
The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. on Friday, March 29. Awards will be announced Friday, April 12.

One $5,000, four $2,500, and five $1,000 one-time scholarships will be presented to students who meet the eligibility requirements. Awardees must be California residents; with residents of Bonta’s 18th Assembly District — Oakland, Alameda and San Leandro — given preference.

Applications must include:

  • A completed cover sheet
  • A one-page resume
  • An official transcript
  • A 500-word essay responding to the theme: “Overcoming adversity, giving back and promoting opportunity, equity, justice and/or inclusion.”
  • Two letters of recommendation that address the applicant’s character, integrity and/or uniqueness. These may be from teachers, counselors, supervisors, coaches  and mentors. Letters of recommendation must be received by email, at Bonta.Foundation@gmail.com by the application deadline.
