News Briefs

For many decades the Alameda community has come together to support local families during the holiday season. Last year, the community donated more than 1,100 turkeys, which were distributed, along with other holiday food items, to Alameda Food Bank’s clients. This year the Food Bank aims to collect 1,100 turkeys by Wednesday, Nov. 8.

The Encinal High School (EHS) Drama Department is presenting Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream as a special fundraiser to help support the Alameda Food Bank. Midsummer will play over two weekends: Oct. 21, 22, 28 and 29 at 2 p.m. in the Encinal Amphitheater (a.k.a. the student parking lot).

Admission is free, but donations are requested to help provide food for the hungry in Alameda. This continues a tradition of using theater to help fund local nonprofits going back many years.

Next Thursday, Oct. 26, outstanding community volunteers, one nonprofit organization and representatives of Alameda’s business community will receive City of Alameda Community Service Awards during a reception and presentation ceremony at the Alameda Elks Lodge, 2255 Santa Clara Ave.

The reception begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by the awards presentation at 7 p.m.
A lifetime achievement award will be presented to Honora Murphy, for her more than 50 years of volunteer service.

Additional honorees include:

The small ticket booth received a reprieve from the wrecking ball when it was protected earlier this year (“Quick Action Saves West End Railroad Landmark,” Feb. 2).

On Tuesday, Oct. 24, the West End Library at 788 Santa Clara Ave. will host an estate planning question-and-answer session with a local attorney from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The library will be open for the program only.
