Bird Sightings from Around the Island City
Alameda is known for having different bird species nesting around the Island. But lately, larger bird species have been spotted roaming around Alameda providing residents with friendship and great photos.
Buddy the Goose, a local celebrity, lives down by the Sea Plane Lagoon ferry terminal. With a broken wing (not a current injury), Buddy will be euthanized if taken to the wildlife center, so instead, she lives a good life on free bayfront property and is well cared for by neighbors and the city’s Animal Control Officer. Stop by and say hello to Buddy, but do not feed bread to Buddy or any geese because it can cause them harm.
Earlier this month, Alameda resident Neil Taikeff spotted several wild turkeys roaming Alameda sidewalks. Taikeff said he saw them as he got off a bus and there they were, at the intersection of Santa Clara Avenue and Saint Charles Street.
“The whole family with chicks, they decided to stop in the garden of the house on the corner for a quick snack,” said Taikeff.
Sun staff members have spotted wild turkeys across the street from our headquarters on High Street. They must have been trying to get a scoop on the local news around the city. They’ve also been spotted in the Gold Coast neighborhood.
If you spot any wild animals roaming Alameda, take a picture and send it to editor@alamedasun.com.
