Bay Farm Bridge Due for Facelift
Beginning sometime next month Caltrans plans to begin giving the Bay Farm Bridge and the adjacent bicycle bridge a $3.4 million makeover. Workers will pressure wash and paint the bridge, as well as service the span’s hydraulic system. They will also modify the bridge’s catwalk to ease maintenance work on the span and replace the bridges’ traffic and pedestrian gates. Caltrans says that it also plans to outfit the bike bridge for better maintenance access.
Caltrans plans to close the bridge to automobile, bicycle and boat traffic through May 2016. The traffic and bike bridge will close beginning next month. The bridge will completely close to boat traffic beginning Jan. 2, 2016.
Caltrans says that it will adhere to the following schedule for automobile and bicycle traffic.
Automobiles: Monday through Thursday from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.; Friday from midnight to 4 a.m.; Saturday from midnight to 6 a.m. and Sunday from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Bicycles: Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.; Friday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Caltrans does not plan to close the bike bridge during the day on Friday or over the weekend.
The 62-year-old Bay Farm Island Bridge last received a facelift in 1978.
