Basketball Teams Post Results
Midway through the winter basketball season, the St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) women’s basketball teams has stood out as the best team on the Island.
The SJND team has a 10-3 overall record at the midway point. Though the squad lost its last game, 70-46, to national power Mater Dei of Santa Ana on Jan. 5, the Pilots still have the best record of any Alameda team. The Pilots hung with the Monarchs in the first quarter, trailing just 16-15. The Monarchs gained separation in the second quarter, outscoring the Pilots, 16-4. The Pilots were outscored, 39-26, in the second half.
Nonetheless, SJND began the season with three straight victories over Dixon High, 80-18, on Nov. 24, Arroyo High of San Lorenzo, 77-27, on Nov. 27 and Whitney High of Rocklin, 66-51, on Dec. 1. They also went 2-1 at the Gillette Energy Classic in Gillette, Wyo. They defeated Lebanon High of Lebanon, Ore., 73-26, on Dec. 27 and Campbell County High of Gillette, 73-41, on Dec. 28. They lost to Thunder Basin High of Gillette, 62-49, on Dec. 29. The team begins league play today against Valley Christian of Dublin on the road.
The Alameda High School (AHS) women’s basketball team have been up-and-down this season, but appear to have righted the ship. The Hornets are in the middle of a three-game winning streak, its longest win streak of the season. After losing in the first round of the West Coast Jamboree to Acalanes High of Lafayette, 52-51, on Dec. 27, the Hornets defeated Lowell High of San Francisco, 62-41, on Dec. 28 and Saratoga High, 64-45, on Dec. 29 to win the tournament’s consolation bracket. AHS then beat San Leandro High, 47-43, on Jan. 3. The team has an 8-4 overall record.
The Encinal High School (EHS) women’s team is 5-5 on the season. After winning their season opener, 43-26, against Albany High, the Jets went on a four-game losing streak. Since then they have won four out of five contests including a 2-1 performance at the West Coast Jamboree. They beat Dougherty Valley High of San Ramon, 68-58, on Dec. 27, Monterey Trail High of Elk Grove, 67-53, on Dec. 28 and Rancho Cotate High of Rohnert Park, 54-49. They took on Arroyo yesterday in the team’s first West Alameda County Conference (WACC) game of the season.
The SJND men’s basketball team has an 7-6 record. They lost their last two games, both in overtime. They lost to Monte Vista High of Danville, 69-65, in triple overtime on Dec. 29. They lost in overtime to Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland, 52-51, on Jan. 5. They will take on Valley Christian today in the team’s first league game.
The AHS basketball team is also a game above .500 at 8-7. The team is on a three-game losing streak after going on a three-game winning streak. The team achieved victories over SJND, 58-54, on Dec. 21, Woodinville High in Woodinville, Wash., 71-67, on Dec. 27 and Granite Bay High, 50-39, in the win streak. They faced Hayward High yesterday in the first WACC contest.
The EHS men’s basketball team is 6-8 on the year. In its last game the Jets defeated Ukiah High, 56-41. They outscored the Wildcats 21-7 in the first quarter on route to the victory. They faced Arroyo yesterday in the WACC opener.
