Basketball Season Off to Strong Start for Most
The winter high schools sports’ season is in full swing and both men’s and women’s teams on the hardwood are putting together great seasons at the halfway point. Five of the six Alameda high school basketball teams have a winning records as of Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Encinal Jets Men’s Basketball
Both the Encinal men and women’s teams have gotten off to great starts. The men’s team is 10-6 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in the West Alameda County Conference (WACC). The Jets, coached by Jonathan Canalin, have posted key wins over University of San Francisco (63-56) on Dec. 13, Kennedy of Fremont (60-49) on Jan. 4 and against its rival Alameda (63- 46) on Jan. 10. The Jets are blowing through the WACC with wins over Hayward and Tennyson of Hayward. The Jets will take on Piedmont tomorrow at home.
Encinal Lady Jets Basketball
The Encinal women’s team is sporting an 11-4 overall record and 3-0 in the WACC as of Jan. 21. The Lady Jets posted some impressive non-league wins over Campolindo of Moraga (65-63) on Nov. 30, Hercules (66-41) on Dec. 11, and Pinole Valley (61-52) on Dec. 18. The Jets, coached by Ron Caldwell, have defeated San Leandro (54-40), San Lorenzo (54-40) and Tennyson (57-50) so far in league play. The Lady Jets next game will be against Mt. Eden of Hayward tomorrow on the road. SJND Pilots Men’s Basketball The St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) men’s basketball team is dominating its competition like they do every year. Currently, they sport a 15-5 overall record and 3-1 league record. The Pilots, coached by Don Lippi, opened the season with a 93-11 victory over Averroes of Fremont on Dec. 5. The Pilots also defeated Marin Catholic of Kentfield 55-54 on Dec. 13, Branson of Ross 64-62 on Dec. 26 and Marin Academy of San Rafael 65-48 at the renowned MLK Classic on Jan. 18. The Pilots have defeated El Cerrito (55-49), St. Mary’s of Albany (63-43) and Pinole Valley (50-40) so far in the Tri-County Athletic League. They will face El Cerrito tomorrow at home in its next game.
SJND Lady Pilots Basketball
The women’s team is also off to a strong 10-7 start. The team has huge victories on its belt including a 55-5 victory over Holy Names of Oakland on Dec. 7, a 61-59 nail biter over Urban of San Francisco on Dec. 20 and a 39-33 victory over University of San Francisco on Jan. 4. The Lady Pilots are on a bit of a down swing losing their last three ballgames, all in league play, as of Jan. 21. The Pilots only TCAL win came over El Cerrito in a 46-10 contest on Jan. 8. They look to right the ship against the Gauchos tomorrow, this time on the road.
Alameda Hornets Men’s Basketball
The Alameda High men’s basketball team is off to a rough start in the 2013-14 season. The team has amassed a record of 5-11 overall, but is 2-1 in the WACC. The Hornets have posted key wins over Northgate of Walnut Creek (68-50) on Dec. 5, Petaluma (60-53) on Dec. 21 and over Mt. Eden 65-59 on Jan. 18. The Hornets, coached by Allen Nakamura, have righted their ship in the WACC. After losing their league opener to Encinal, they have posted wins over Tennyson (68- 50) on Jan. 15 and Arroyo of San Lorenzo (68-57) on Jan. 17. The Hornets look to add to their threegame winning streak over Hayward tomorrow on the road.
Alameda Lady Hornets Basketball
The Lady Hornets are currently 8-7 on the season. They have collected victories over Argonaut of Jackson (53-43) on Dec. 5, Pittsburg (50-43) on Dec. 14 and against Dublin (60-56) on Dec. 21. Alameda, coached by Brad Thomas, however is currently on a three-game skid, with all three losses coming in league play against Bishop O’ Dowd (60-25), Berkeley (53-38) and Castro Valley (64-61).
