Basketball Season Overview
The high-school basketball season is well underway, and all six Alameda high-school teams are gearing up for a strong 2019-2020 season.
Alameda High School
The Alameda High School (AHS) men’s team is currently 2-5 overall on the season. The Hornets beat Marin Academy, 78-29, in their first win of the season. They outscored the Wildcats, 38-8, in the second half. The Hornets pulled out a 68-61 victory over Tamalpais High of Mill Valley in their second victory. They outscored the Red Tailed Hawks, 25-12, in the fourth quarter. The win ended a four-game losing streak for the Hornets. AHS’ next contest will come against Las Lomas High of Walnut Creek tomorrow.
The AHS women’s team is 7-1 overall including a 3-0 performance at the Tamalpais High Tournament. They defeated West Valley High of Cottonwood, 66-32, Colfax High School, 56-52, and Newark Memorial High, 71-56, in the tournament. They will face Redwood High of Larkspur in their next game on Saturday, Dec. 21.
Encinal High School
The Encinal High School (EHS) men’s team is 5-3 in the early season. The Jets have been on the winning side of some close games. EHS has won three of its five games by less than five points, including a one-point victory. They beat Pinole Valley High, 49-45, Washington High of San Francisco, 53-49, and Sonoma Valley High, 47-46. The Jets will take on Dublin High School on the road today in the Don Nelson Classic.
The EHS women’s team is 2-4 on the season. The Jets’ first victory came in a 62-49 win over Pinole Valley High. It came in the Cardinal Newman High Tournament. The team went 1-2 in the tournament. They lost to Sacred Heart Cathedral of San Francisco, 59-33, and Whitney High of Rocklin, 48-34. They beat Albany High School, 46-23, in their other victory. They will take part in the Presentation High Shootout with a match up against Woodside Priory High on Saturday.
St. Joseph Notre Dame
The St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) men’s team is 2-2 on the season. The Pilots won their first two contests of the season. They beat Clovis East High, 66-60, and a week later they beat Urban of San Francisco, 63-43. However, they lost to Las Lomas High, 57-45, in the Island Classic at their home gym. They also lost a nail biter to Oakland High School, 50-49. The Pilots will look to rebound against Bellarmine College Prep of San Jose tomorrow.
The SJND women’s team is a perfect 4-0 on the season. The Pilots have been blowing teams away. Only one of their four victories has been by less than 40 points. They opened the season with a 97-25 victory over McNair High of Stockton. They followed that with an 87-3 beat down of College Prep of Oakland. They had a modest 55-42 win over Clovis High School. Lastly they beat Half Moon Bay High School, 79-33. The Pilots hope to continue their win streak with a match up against Terra Linda High of San Rafael on Dec. 23.
Last year, the Pilots advanced to the North Coast Section Div. V championship game, but lost to Salesian College Prep of Richmond, 58-54.
