Basketball Postseason Continues for Some

Just two Alameda high school basketball teams survived the first week of the North Coast Section (NCS) playoffs last week.

St. Joseph Notre Dame
The St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) women’s basketball team continued its domination of opponents in the first week of the NCS Div. III women’s basketball tournament. The third-seed Pilots won their first two contests by a combined score of 161-44.

The Pilots took on Pinole Valley High School (PVHS) on Feb. 12 at home. The Pilots bum rushed the Spartans from the opening tip. They led 33-0 at the end of the first quarter. The 14-seed PVHS scored just four points in the second quarter. The final score was 87-13. Junior Malia Mastora led the Pilots with 16 points.

The Pilots advanced to take on Moreau Catholic High School (MCHS) of Hayward in the quarterfinal on Feb. 15.

The Mariners were not as anemic as the Pilots’ first-round opponent. SJND only outscored MCHS 20-4 in the first quarter. However, the outcome was still a Pilot blowout. SJND led 39-10 at the end of the first half. SJND went on to win 74-31. Senior Zhane Duckett led SJND with 17 points. The Pilots advanced to the semifinal where they took on Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa yesterday.

The SJND men’s basketball team also advanced to the NCS Div. III men’s tournament semifinal after two wins over Alhambra and Albany high schools.

The fifth-seed Pilots defeated Alhambra High, 63-42, in the first round on Feb. 12. SJND then took down Albany High in a defensive battle, 37-29, on Feb. 15. The Pilots entered the matchup with the fourth-seed Cougars as the underdog. SJND led 14-3 after the first quarter and never looked back.
The Pilots played the first-seed Salesian College Preparatory (SCP) of Richmond yesterday in the semifinal. SCP entered the game undefeated at 29-0.

The Alameda High School (AHS) women’s basketball team (16-12) defeated Tamalpais High of Mill Valley 50-40 in the first round of the NCS Div. II women’s tournament on Feb. 12, but lost to Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland, 50-34, in the quarterfinal on Feb. 15.

The AHS men’s team (16-11), the reigning Div. II NorCal champions, lost to San Lorenzo High 61-56 in the first round of the men’s tournament on Feb. 12.
