Baseball Postseason Begins

The North Coast Section (NCS) softball and baseball playoffs begin this week with heavy Alameda high school representation.

An Island City clash took place in the first round of the NCS Div. III softball tournament when Encinal High School (EHS) faced St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) yesterday at Leydecker Park. The game took place after Alameda Sun press time.

The Jets entered the postseason with an 11-9 overall record. They went 8-4 in the West Alameda County Conference (WACC) Shoreline League. In the Shoreline League playoffs they defeated Hayward High School, 15-5, in the semifinal on May 7, but lost, 15-0, in the final to Mt. Eden High School of Hayward on May 9.

The Pilots entered the NCS playoffs with a 16-2 overall record and 6-0 in the Bay Counties-East (BCE) League. SJND has dominated in league play. They outscored their opponents 92-1 in their six BCE games. The Pilots were given the No. 4 seed in 15-team tournament, while the Jets are the No. 13 seed. SJND won the NCS Div. IV softball tournament with a 4-0 victory over Del Norte High of Crescent City.

Alameda High School (AHS) did not qualify for the postseason. They went 11-12 overall.

The SJND baseball team took on Campolindo High of Moraga Tuesday, May 14, at College of Alameda in the first round of the NCS Div. III baseball tournament. The Pilots are at home as the No. 8 seed in the 16-team playoffs, while Campolindo is the nine-seed. 

The Pilots entered the tournament with a 16-8 overall record and 8-2 in the BCE League. The Pilots tied with Athenian High of Danville atop the BCE League at 8-2, but the Pilots two league losses came against Athenian (8-3 on May 7, and 9-8 on May 9). 

EHS will also compete in the Div. III tournament. The Jets are the No. 14 seed. They played their first-round match against Sonoma Valley on the road. Sonoma Valley is the No. 3 seed. EHS went 13-11 overall and 8-3 in the Shoreline League. They also won the Shoreline League tournament with a 3-1 victory over Piedmont on May 9. 

AHS played Sir Francis Drake High of San Anselmo yesterday on the road in the first round of the NCS Div. II playoffs. The Hornets are the No. 11 seed in the tournament while Sir Francis Drake is the No. 6 seed. The Hornets went 15-9 overall and 10-5 in the WACC Foothill League.
