Arrest Made After Incident at Alameda High School

Alameda police arrested a man last week after he entered an Alameda High School (AHS) classroom without permission on Tuesday, Dec. 6.

Alameda Police Department (APD) officers arrested Hoan Hong Truong, 27, Wednesday, Dec. 7, the day after he was chased off the AHS campus by a teacher. According to APD reports, officers located Truong walking along the 1100 block of Park Street around noon last Wednesday when they made the arrest.

Truong was charged with possession of unlawful paraphernalia and a probation violation, according to the APD daily activity log. The Alameda County inmate locator database states Truong was charged with possession of a weapon (box cutter) on school grounds and annoying or molesting a child under 18, along with the probation violation. He is currently being held at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin as of Monday, Dec. 12. His arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 13 at the Wiley Manuel Courthouse in Oakland.

The incident took place last Tuesday. An AHS teacher noticed Truong sitting in a classroom. Truong allegedly approached a girl and touched her face. When the teacher confronted him, Truong left the room. He then encountered two girls in the hall and asked if he could kiss one of them, according to an Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) report. The teacher then followed Truong as he left school grounds.

The teacher continued following him all the way to the Fruitvale Bart Station, where he asked for assistance from BART Police. BART officers took a picture of Truong, but he was lost at the station.

During this time, around 2:53 p.m., APD received a call from a witness reporting that two men were arguing near the Alameda Main Library. At this time, APD was unaware of the incident at the high school. At 3:05 p.m., dispatchers were told that one of the men was a teacher and he was following the other man after an on-campus incident. After receiving this information, officers immediately responded to Alameda High School.

This was the second trespassing incident of the day on AHS’ campus. Earlier in the day, a former AHS student was seen on AHS’ campus acting erratically, according to an AUSD report. A group of students filmed the man and promptly brought it to the office. Campus security was alerted, and they found him in Kofman Auditorium, talking to a dance instructor. The young man then went to the front office, where Principal Ithurburn engaged him and took him into his office, and another teacher was able to identify him.

AHS Principal Robert Ithurburn and the young man continued to talk while APD and the Alameda Fire Department Community Assessment Response & Engagement (CARE) Team was called. The CARE Team confirmed they knew the young man and removed him from campus around noon.

The teacher followed the trespassing/battery suspect from Alameda High to the Fruitvale BART Station on foot? That is at least a 20-30 minute walk crossing a bridge and along heavily traveled streets. Why didn't the teacher call 911 and have Alameda PD respond? The article suggests that APD was never notified of the trespass and battery. Serious training about critical incidents at AHS recommended.
