APD Cracks down on Scofflaws
Over the weekend of March 5 and 6, teams of Alameda Police Department (APD) patrol sergeants and officers conducted operations in the Downtown Alameda and Webster Street business districts. Officers issued 159 citations to drivers of double-parked vehicles, as well as to bicyclists and scooter riders and smokers violating city ordinances. APD also responded to calls for service on both Webster and Park streets that resulted two arrests: one for theft and the second for being drunk in public.
APD wants to remind residents that smoking is prohibited in shopping malls, service lanes, public events, recreation areas, dining areas and on commercial-area sidewalks. In addition APD states that, “Bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists and are subject to the same rules and regulations.” Bicycles and scooters are prohibited on sidewalks that pass directly in front of, or adjacent to, any stores, schools or other buildings used for business purposes.
