APD Arrests Four in Retail Theft Case

Alameda police officers arrested four individuals who allegedly stole more than $1,000 of merchandise from a store at South Shore Center on Dec. 13.

Alameda Police Department (APD) dispatchers received a call of an in-progress retail theft last Tuesday, just after 7 p.m., according to an APD report. APD officers headed to the area and positioned themselves outside of the retailer’s storefront. Moments later, four individuals exited the store and were stopped by the awaiting officers.

During the stop, officers recovered the merchandise from the four individuals. The items include non-prescription medicine, cologne and various toys.

According to the report, additional items from other businesses throughout the Bay Area were located on the four individuals and are in the process of being returned. With the help of loss prevention officers, APD connected the group to a Fremont Police Department grand theft case.

APD officers have increased patrol of areas around shopping districts during the holiday season. They have strengthened retail partnerships, provided education to loss prevention officers, and planned strategic patrols. APD officers assigned to city shopping districts are working with retailers to monitor safety and crime-related activity to create a positive shopping experience for all. Last week, APD interrupted several in-progress thefts, made a number of arrests, and recovered and returned several high-valued pieces of merchandise.
