Alamedan Wins Table Tennis Tourney

Alameda natives Aziz and Kai Zarehbin competed in the Triple 8 Table Tennis Winterfest Tournament in Burlingame, Calif. on Dec. 3 to 5.

Aziz won the under-2450 tournament — the number declares an athlete’s United States Table Tennis ranking. Fourteen players competed in the competition. Aziz went 3-1 in the round-robin portion. He defeated Victor Xie, 3-0, and Vinay Chandra, 3-1, lost to Dong Liu, 2-3, and beat Arjun Chandrasekar, 3-0.

His record put him in the championship bracket. He defeated Xianyao He, 3-0 (11-7, 11-3, 11-7) and beat Matthew Lehmann, 3-0 (11-7, 14-12, 12-10), to capture the title.
Aziz’s U.S. ranking improved from 2431 to 2382.

Kai lost a tough match in the under-2600 tournament final. He went 2-2 in the round-robin competition to advance to the championship tournament. In the tournament, Kai took down Lehmann, 3-0 (11-9, 19-17, 11-8), in the first round. He beat Tianrui, 3-2 (11-8, 11-8, 11-13, 7-11, 11-9), in the semifinals. He lost to Nina Mittelham, 3-1 (11-9, 9-11, 9-11, 7-11).
