Alameda Walks Kicks off May 5

Alameda Walks, a program designed to get locals out and walking early on a Saturday, will start its 2018 schedule on May 5. All walks begin at 9 a.m. and last approximately one hour. Look for the red Alameda Walks hats; no pets, please. The program is administered by the Alameda Recreation and Parks Department.

The May 5 walk is titled “Alameda Hospital, Leonardville and the Meyers House.” Meet at Alameda Hospital, main entrance in the middle of the parking lot. Explore the hospital, visit Leonardville, the old south shore and the Meyers House. The walk will cover central Alameda and look at the varied architecture on Grand Street.

On May 12, Dennis Evanosky and Eric J. Kos will lead walkers around the site of the Sather Mound, a Native American shellmound removed around 1910. Meet at Lincoln Park, 1450 High St.

On June 2 walkers will visit the Sand Castle Contest. Meet at the tennis courts in Lower Washington Park. The walk will end with the opportunity to check out the building of the sand castles and sculptures and to celebrate the 52nd anniversary of the contest.
