Alameda Volleyball Season Heating Up

The high school women’s volleyball season is well underway and Alameda high school teams are looking to set up strong seasons.

Alameda High School (AHS) has been dominant so far in the early season. The Hornets are 5-0 including a 3-0 sweep of Encinal High School (EHS) on Sept. 10. The team also beat American High of Fremont, 3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 19-25, 25-17) on Aug. 29, Oakland Tech, 3-1 (25-6, 25-5, 15-25, 25-5) on Sept. 4 and Skyline High of Oakland, 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-16) on Sept. 11. The squad will take on Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland in its first West Alameda County Conference (WACC) matchup today.

EHS is 0-4 so far this season. The Jets are struggling to start the season. They have only won one set in its first four matches. That came in a 3-1 defeat to Salesian College Prep of Richmond on Sept. 3. The match looked promising after the Jets won the first set, 25-15, but lost the last three, 20-25, 18-25 and 15-25. The Jets will look to get on track today against WACC foe Tennyson High of San Leandro.

St. Joseph Notre Dame is 4-4 this season. They opened with three straight victories, but have since lost four out of five. They went 1-and-3 at the Cougar Challenge Tournament with a 2-0 (25-12, 25-15) win over Holy Names of Oakland. They will seek revenge against Tri-County East League foe Head-Royce of Oakland in its next contest today at home after losing to them 3-2 on Sept. 12.
