More than 1,500 Americans from across the country — including a delegation of Bay Area residents — will show their support for the United Nations (UN) at the United Nations Association of the United States of America’s 2019 Global Engagement Summit at UN Headquarters in New York City, this Saturday, Feb. 23. Gisele Araujo, a senior at St. Joseph Notre Dame High School (SJND) is a member of the Bay Area delegation. Araujo serves as SJND’s student body president and leads the school’s Model UN Club.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres will address the audience in the General Assembly Hall to begin the event. His remarks will be followed by a day of discussions on the world’s most pressing issues, including the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, nuclear non-proliferation and the growing threat of climate change. Other notable speakers include President of the UN General Assembly María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés.

Americans like Araujo, view the Global Engagement Summit as an opportunity to send a strong message to Secretary-General Guterres: Despite division in Washington, Americans can put partisan politics aside to come together in support of the UN.
