Alameda Soccer Teams Seek Comebacks in the New Year

The high school soccer season is currently on winter break with many Alameda high school teams looking to redeem themselves in the new year.

St. Joseph Notre Dame
The St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) women’s team is 1-4 on the season. The Pilots got their first win of the season in a convincing 7-0 thumping of Redwood Christian of San Lorenzo on Dec. 10.

However, the Pilots have struggled on both ends of the pitch in their four losses. Offensively, they scored just one goal in the four losses. That came in an 11-1 defeat to Bentley High of Lafayette on Dec. 3. The other four defeats have all been shutouts. They lost, 6-0, to Lick-Wilmerding of San Francisco in the season opener on Nov. 30, 8-0 to Head-Royce of Oakland on Dec. 7, and 8-0 to Berean Christian of Walnut Creek on Dec. 16.

The Pilots will face Make Waves Academy of Richmond in a league contest on Jan. 5.

Encinal
The Encinal High School (EHS) men’s soccer team is off to a slow start. They are 0-2-1 on the season. They too have had a hard time putting the ball in the net. They lost the season opener 8-1 to Hayward High School on Dec. 3. They were able to battle San Leandro High School to a 2-2 tie on Dec. 18 at home. Two days later, however, they were shutout, 4-0, by Alameda High School (AHS). The Jets will face Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland on Jan. 5.

The EHS women’s team is 3-2 overall on the season. They won their first two games of the year with shutouts. They beat Kennedy High of Fremont, 5-0, on Nov. 30, and Mt. Eden High of Hayward, 8-0, on Dec. 3. The Jets lost a close game, 2-1, to Bishop O’Dowd on Dec. 6, but rebounded with a 2-0 victory over San Lorenzo High School on Dec. 9. EHS lost, 2-0, in their last contest of 2021 to Archie Williams of San Anselmo on Dec. 17.

Their victories over Mt. Eden and San Lorenzo were league contests. Their 2-0 record puts them tied for first place in the West Alameda County Conference Shoreline League with Hayward High School. The Jets will take on Hayward for the top spot of the Shoreline League in its next contest on Jan. 5.

Alameda High
The Alameda High School (AHS) men’s soccer team is 3-2-2 on the season. They started the season with a 2-0 victory over Kennedy High of Richmond on Dec. 1. AHS lost, 2-0, to Campolindo High of Moraga on Dec. 4. They battled Bishop O’Dowd to a scoreless tie on Dec. 8. The Hornets achieved back-to-back shutout victories on back-to-back days against Encinal, 4-0 on Dec. 10, and Kennedy, 5-0, on Dec. 11. The Hornets battled San Lorenzo to a 2-2 tie on Dec. 17. They lost their last contest of 2021, 1-0, to Livermore High School on Dec. 18.

AHS is in second place in the Shoreline League with a 1-0-2 record. The Hornets will begin 2022 with a contest against Arroyo of San Lorenzo on Jan. 5.

The AHS women’s team is 1-2 on the season. They beat Hayward, 6-1, in the season opener on Nov. 17. However, the Hornets dropped the last two games to Castro Valley High School, 4-1 on Dec. 8, and Berkeley High School, 1-0 on Dec. 10. They will face Arroyo on Jan. 5.
