Alameda Scouts Earn Scouting’s Highest Honor
Robert Chan, Kevin Gies, Benedetto Ratto III, Miles Smith and Chase VanDerveer received the Eagle Scout award during a Boys Scout of America National Court of Honor ceremony earlier this month. Each scout, over a span of several years, has worked their way through the various ranks earning at least 21 merit badges, served in multiple leadership positions, and planned and implemented a community service project to earn scouting’s highest achievement as youth members of the Golden Gate Area Council.
Scouting highlights for these individuals include monthly camping, backpacking, climbing and watersports outings. The scouts also attended numerous summer camps, National and World Scout Jamborees, and National Youth Leadership training. Their Eagle Scout service projects collectively amassed hundreds of hours of planning, leadership and community service and benefitted local campuses, non-profits and more. The scouts are members of Boy Scout 89 — chartered by Oakland Machine Works — which meets at St. Joseph’s Notre Dame Hall on Monday evenings. Boy Scout 89 has produced more than 120 Eagle Scouts since 1967.
