Alameda Native Qualifies as New Professional Golfer
Alameda native Grace Na earned a Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tour card for the 2016 season after finishing tied for second place at the LPGA Final Stage Qualifying Tournament last Sunday, Dec. 6.
Na, who attended Alameda High, shot an 11-under 349 during the five-day tournament. The tournament began on Wednesday, Dec 2, and concluded last Sunday. The first four rounds of the tournament rotated between the Jones and Hill Courses at the LPGA International Golf Complex in Daytona Beach, Fla. The final round was played on the Hills Course. Both courses are par-72 courses.
Na posted a net 70-69-69-72-69 (11-under par 349) in the five days of the tournament. Simin Feng, from Beijing, was the overall winner, firing a 3-under-par 69 on Sunday to finish 18-under-par overall.
Na will now be able to compete in LPGA golf events. The LPGA is the highest ladies golf tour division. The top 20 finishers, of the 157 that competed, earned exempt status on the tour for the 2016 season. Na will now be able to compete in LPGA tour events, including the LPGA Championship. She qualified for the final stage by coming in second place at the second stage of qualifying, shooting a 3-under 285 in October.
Na was a decorated prep player for the Alameda High. She won the California Interscholastic Federation state championship as an individual in 2010.
She was also named the 2010 East Bay Golfer of the Year by the Oakland Tribune. She led the Hornets to a fourth-place team finish at the state event in 2010, the best in school history, and its first NorCal Division I team title.
After graduating from Alameda High in Jan. 2011— she graduated a semester early — she attended Pepperdine University in Malibu. As a member of the Wave golf team, Na was a four-time All-American (twice on the first team) and a four-time West Coast Conference Player of the Year award winner.
