Alameda Most Charming

A national real estate website named Alameda the most charming small city in the U.S. According to, Alameda was given the distinction because they had the highest score on their “Charm Index.” The study describes small city as one with a population between 75,000 and 200,000.

According to the study, the Charm Index uses data to visualize the best/worst places to live in a city. They pull in information on local businesses, crime, local lifestyles (e.g., bike trails, gyms in the area, etc.) and more to create each score. 

Alameda was given a charm location score of 97 out of 100. Alameda received top scores for charm due to a high concentration of local business boutiques. Also, with a combination of highly rated businesses, many of Alameda’s local institutions such as a theatre and city hall. Alameda peaks in charm on Park Street from Encinal Avenue to Tilden Way.

San Mateo (second) and Berkeley (sixth) also made the list.
