Alameda Little Leaguers Shine in District Tourney
The Alameda Intermediate 50/70 (13 yr. old) boys’ All-Star team lost a close game to East County for the District 4 Championship on June 26 at Olivera Field in Concord.
After a tough stretch of games leading up the final, the Island City team had just nine available players, the minimum number of players needed to play, entering its match up against East County in the final. The team had strong hitting and defense performances led by starting pitcher Sam Paskins. The team from Alameda won 9-4 on June 25. However, because the tournament is double elimination and East County already defeated Alameda earlier in the tournament, Alameda had to face off against East County again the next day.
The game on June 26 was winner takes all after both teams experienced a loss. Alameda led the Championship game for the first three innings by one run with a strong defense led by starting pitcher Colin Ng, who threw 10 strike-outs in the contest. However, it wasn’t enough to take home the victory. East County scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning for a final score of 3-2.
The Island City team started the California District 4 Intermediate Tournament with 11 players and won the first two games against North Oakland (NOLL)/South Oakland (SOLL) No. 2, 13-2, and Continental, 12-0. By the third game, the team was down to nine players. On June 23, East County knocked Alameda into the elimination bracket with a 3-2 win. Alameda beat NOLL/SOLL No. 1, 9-8, the next day to advance to the final.
East County advanced to the District 4 Section One Tournament.
